5 Steps to Start Your Small Business Blog Today. You know you have to blog for your small business, but you don't know where to start. Sounds familiar? If so, read on, for what you need to do to start a small business blog today.

If you already have a Blogspot website for your business and only want to add a blog, you can do it through their dashboard.

To add a blog to an existing non-Blogspot site involves a more technical process that might require the help of a designer or web developer.

But if you start from scratch, this is a step-by-step process to start your small business blog today.

1. Determine the blogging platform.

This is an important decision. Choosing the wrong platform may not make or break you, but it can make things harder than it should.

There are many different blog sites that you can use, but the most flexible and easy to use platform out there is WordPress. There are two types of WordPress sites and it is important that you choose the right one. There is WordPress.com, which allows you to set up, in a few minutes, a blog and domain (eg, www.yoursite.wordpress.com). I do not recommend using this version, for reasons that go beyond the scope of this article.

I recommend using WordPress.org to make your own blog hosted. This site is easy to use, although non-technicians might need a little help with initial setup.

Both versions are free. Hosting and domain registration will cost a little, but more than that later.

If you want to explore your options, there are several other platforms that are completely free and give you the ability to manage your site in a few steps; they include Weebly, Joomla and Drupal. However, you must realize that most of these sites will not work for business blogs in the long run. Limits in terms of design, functionality, and SEO will make it very difficult later to have a successful business blog.

2. Choose a WordPress theme.

One of the best features of WordPress is that it allows you to easily adjust the look and feel of your blog, using themes. There is a large list of free themes available in the WordPress Theme Directory, or try checking premium (paid) themes on sites like ThemeForest.

When choosing a theme, note the following:
  • Is it responsive? Is this well displayed on various devices, including desktops, tablets and mobile devices?
  • Is it accompanied by several levels of customer support and / or support forums?
  • Does this allow a level of adjustment (eg, Changing colors, navigation menus, buttons, widgets, etc.)?

3. Register a domain name.

After you decide which blogging platform you will use, choose a domain name. This will be the URL used to access your site (eg, www.yoursite.com). You can do this through domain registrars such as NameCheap, 1 & 1 or GoDaddy.

Your domain will cost around $ 10 per year; the price drops if you are willing to pay more than one year in advance. Try selecting .com domain (as opposed to .net, .biz, etc.), if possible, and use your trademarked business name if available. Make sure your domain is easy to remember but specific enough to distinguish you from a site or business of the same name.

4. Buy web hosting.

Even though your WordPress site is free, you still have to pay to host your blog, which costs more than renting a domain. You can buy web hosting services through a number of different companies, but some of the more popular ones are GoDaddy, Hostgator, Bluehost and 1 & 1.

5. Make a plan, and get writing!

This is the fun part, the reason you decided to get a business blog from the start. But before you dive, it's important to think about the purpose of your blog.
  • What is your main goal? Is that to get direction, build your email list or become an expert in your field?
  • How often will you be committed to blogging? Ideally two or three times a week, but blogging once a week is far better than nothing.
  • What is the "voice" of your blog? Relax and fun? Authority? Academic?
  • How do you make your readers take action while on your blog? Email inclusion box? Link to sales page? Or an invitation to act to fill in the offer request?

After you have a plan, please write. Focus on topics where you have unique insights to share, or where you really can add conversation. Don't just repeat what others say. Original and write down topics that have more value for your audience.
