Increase Your Online Audience with Guest Posts. Lately, I have written guest posts like crazy. More than I ever had, in fact, in more than six years blogging was stable. In addition to my commitment to posting regularly on this blog, this is an investment of time. So why bother?

I believe that posting guests is the single most important strategy to increase the readership and platform of your blog. Allow me to explain ...

What is a guest post?

First of all: let's define our terms. "Posting guests" means writing and publishing articles on other people's websites or blogs.

I offer this on my own site (sometimes) and do it a little on other blogs with the viewers I want to talk to. This is a great way to connect with new readers and get your name out.

But for a long time, I ignored this important discipline to develop popular blogs. I hope I don't. And I hope you won't do it.

There are three reasons why posting guests is the main strategy for every blogger to build their online influence:

Posting guests build relationships

Bloggers need good content. By becoming a good guest blogger and adding value to other people's blogs, you will build relationships with other bloggers.

Bloggers make the most of conversations happening on the Internet, especially on social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. They can be very influential. Which makes them good friends.

By making friends with other bloggers through posting guests, you will grow your influence in the realm of social media, which will eventually lead to more blog customers.

Posting guests is great for search engines

What is not negotiable that you should have for guest posts is this:

Blogger hosts must include a link to your blog at a post somewhere (usually at the beginning or end).

Over time, this backlink will increase the value of your blog to search engines, making your content easier to find through Google, Yahoo, Bing, and others.

Posting guests introduces you to new people

Perhaps, the best part of guest posts is that it allows you to enter established communities, and share your messages. This allows you to connect with new people, which can ultimately benefit you, if you do it right.

If you add value to the discussion, you will see that conversion from time to time to more readers, fans, and followers. Conversely, if all you do is ask or sell, you might be famous, but with a reputation that you don't want. (You don't want to be "that person" who is extending his own agenda.)

Add value. Helping people. Patient. And over time, you will win.

What about people who post guests on your site?

I am also a fan of allowing other people to post guests on my own site from time to time. You should consider offering guest posts on your blog too (if you don't already have one).

If you ask for an opportunity to post a guest on someone else's blog, this only makes sense. This allows the relationships that you have developed with the host blogger to be mutually beneficial.

Some bloggers will even blog about their guest posts and link them from their own blogs (giving you some good link juice). Personally, I'm a fan of this exercise.

The first rule is to be a good guest

When I post guests for others, I do the following:
  • Link to post from my blog
  • Promote on Twitter (several times)
  • Thank you guys
  • Hold and respond to comments in the post

Even though not everyone does this, it's not a bad idea. However, this is important: If you have to choose between directing people to guest posts on your site or guest posts elsewhere, do the latter. It's always better to put your name in a new community.

Posting important guests

According to my friend, Mike the Search Engine Teacher, when it comes to SEO, guest posts on other sites are five times more valuable as creating new content on your own site. (As long as you get a backlink.)

Whether it's true or not, I don't care. (Although, Mike is not the wrong type of guy, so maybe that is the case.) The point is that this is an excellent strategy to expand your reach and improve your reputation online.

Plus, if you are a writer who wants to get more "traditional" publishing opportunities, this is a good first step to finally get your writing displayed on news sites, magazines, and other publications.

If you are not satisfied with the traffic of your blog but don't post on other people's blogs, you don't need to complain much. Start a guest post today, and see your influence grow.
